Aftercare (before bandage is removed)
1. Depending on the type of bandage I used, I will give you instructions whether I will come back to remove it, or ask you to remove it 24 hours later after a bath.
2. It is normal to see blood stains in the diaper for the first day or two, but if there is significant bleeding from the area of the incision, call my cell phone - 650-207-4956.
3. Do not bathe for the first 24 hours.
4. It is normal for the top of the penis to have a dark red or purple color because it was covered by skin until the Bris.
5. Baby should be urinating normally after the bris.
6. Leave on my dressing for the first 24 hours. There is no need to begin using bacitracin and gauze until after my dressing is removed.
Aftercare (post bandage removal)
1. If bandage hasn't fallen off within 24 hours, soak the baby in a warm bath for 10 minutes and remove the bandage after the bath. The area under the glans (head of the penis) may have a blackish appearance due to the surgicel that I sometimes use to help control the bleeding. It will resume a normal color within a few days.
2. After bandage is removed, Bacitracin should be applied to gauze and wrapped around penis underneath the head for 3-5 days (NOTE: There is no wound on the glans, which is the head of the penis).
3. Baby should be given baths twice a day for 5 days, soaking the area of the bris and washing it well with soap.
4. If baby seems to have discomfort, you may give him infant Tylenol every 4-5 hours.
Tylenol recently changed the concentration of their formula. Dosage for a baby 6-11 lbs is 1.25mL for new formula (160mg/5mL).
5. As baby begins to heal, you may notice a grayish or yellowish scab of soft tissue forming around the penis. This is part of the normal healing process and not a concern. It should be kept clean by washing it well, but not removed and will go away by itself.
6. There is a thin layer of skin called the mucous membrane which initially is attached to the head of the penis. After the circumcision this membrane rests directly under the head of the penis. It is normal for this membrane to swell and turn reddish or pinkish a few days after the circumcision. Eventually it will have a normal skin-like appearance and join with the skin underneath it.
7. It will take a few week for the skins to join and look the way you expect it to.
8. At times, due to the anatomy of the penis and the baby gaining weight, the penile skin can be pushed up by the fat developing in the groin area, causing the appearance to be similar to an uncircumcised or partially circumcised penis. Eventually, when the baby grows and thins out, the penis will be exposed and look normal, as it did a few weeks after the bris.
9. Any questions, Please don't hesitate to call.
